I've never had a better toaster
Pros: It looks nice but I was hoping it would be all metal. The chrome parts are plastic. The screen feels like a premium touch screen and the UI is intuitive and easy to use. First time setup is super easy, you just connect to Wifi and it starts downloading updates... yes updates for your toaster. You can set some things on the screen when its not in use like a clock and local weather which I find to be pretty helpful to see in the morning. It comes with a panini attachment which I ended up using quite frequently. You load up your bread and meats and lock the attachment and put it in the right toaster (not the left) and select the panini mode (called toastie press), along with the desired toast level and it automatically toasts it and pops it back out. Normal toast quality is good and better than my toaster oven but there are still some hotspots visible.
Cons: Make sure you buy bread that fits. The toaster slots are comically small.. probably the smallest I've seen in any toaster. I have a $15 toaster that can take bread double in length compared to this. I really don't know why didn't provide longer slots at this price point. There are some hotspots still and I was expecting the bread to be perfectly toasted when you buy something this premium. Maybe they can iron some of these hotspots out with updates but I'm not sure. The toastie press has options for low, medium, and high which dictate the how toasty you want the panini to be but I found that high isn't long enough to melt provolone cheese so I have to run it once on high and then once on medium to get the cheese to the right consistency. I would like to see an option to add additional time to the toastie press mode.
I still think this is a good toaster but I would wait for a solid sale before picking this up. It is fast, works well, and I think with a few updates could produce better and more even toasts. I'd love to see them come up with a solution to using longer bread though!
You can't help but notice the large display. It also has WiFi. The display has small pictures (icons) of different foods that commonly are toasted. below that is a level of browning to choose. Below the start button may be an additional option such as a toggle for the Toastie press under the bread section. The food slowly descends into the toaster after clicking on start. This could be a problem as the possibility of failure exists. It looks cool though. The foods listed are somewhat ethnocentric. There is English muffin but not crumpet. No pita, papadum, roti, paratha, tortilla and so on. In the recipes, they do explain how to toast a tortilla but why not use the display to do that? Also, you can make quesadillas with the press by folding the tortilla over the fillings in a certain way. Why not show that on the display instead of looking on the website or a booklet?
I did try to experiment with some things that are not listed, such as reheating French toast that I had made previously. It seems that if you have a smart toaster, it should be smarter than this. There can be updates. A few hours after plugging this in and changing the settings, it prompted me to download an update. The standard setting for each toast are generally good but it may depend on the brand that you use. For example, the standard English muffin setting was too dark. Perhaps they used Thomas' whereas I used Bay.
I would say that the true potential of this toaster has not yet been fully realized. Perhaps with more updates, that will improve. As for who this is for, those tech types will love this. Anyone who has not made toast or keeps burning it may like the repeated consistent results. The elements get to heat quickly but may not finish toasting much faster than a regular one. The press works very well. It can actually be used with most toasters so you can take advantage of that without purchasing the whole toaster. The toaster reminds you to empty the crumb tray. It doesn't seem to know exactly if many crumbs are there but it's a nice touch. The cord is long enough that I could store it in a cubby but pull it out to use easily. The elements go on and off during use so it seems that there is some programming involved in the toasting process. This toaster may be over engineered but if they can do some serious updates to it, it should be a very handy appliance.
At toasting English muffins: has a dedicated setting, inner surface properly browned and delicious, outer rim tends to burn. Can use my butter knife to snap off the burned bits so not too bad.
At toasting bread. Does a pretty good job and the more I use it, the exact setting will become clearer.
At making a panini, not the greatest as the striping is pretty severe between narrow stripes of toasted bread surrounded by uncooked bread. Also, inside of say a ham and cheese doesn’t get warm enough. So basically a novelty I won’t often use.
Kitchen clock and weather display is nice to have although it thinks it’s 40 miles away in Boston, so not the most accurate weather.
This might seem like a negative review, but the fine control of different types of bread make me consider this an upgrade over my previous toaster which I was constantly having to add extra time to get my bagels or English muffins properly toasted. So a solid 4 stars, mainly not 5 because of the disappointment of the panini feature.
